Their movements, shifts of weight and physical relationships generate the film’s images. The choreography is therefore not merely observed by the camera — it becomes the cinematography itself. CIRCLE is an opera/dance film about two young people who discover that they share the same gaze on the world. Surrounded by an ancient, ritualised community that both contains and separates them, their recognition of one another becomes the beginning of a new bond. Drawing on love stories from ancient Sumer, classical antiquity, Dante and medieval China, the work explores the archetype of two lovers finding each other against forces of separation. As their shared gaze grows, the surrounding social structure begins to change, raising a larger question: when does a shared vision become liberating, and when does it become another circle that limits what we are able to see?
